FDA favors first drug for HIV prevention

This week, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledged the usefulness of the drug, Truvada, to safely and effectively reduce the transmission of HIV via sexual intercourse, if taken on a daily basis. The report stated that "the individual at risk may be spared infection with a serious and life-threatening illness that requires lifelong treatment." The drug is currently being used to manage HIV in infected individuals. A panel of experts will review the report later this week to determine whether or not the drug should be approved as a drug to prevent the virus.
